The Village of New Lenox Requirements

The Village of New Lenox requires homeowners and fence companies alike to obtain a building permit before replacing or installing a new fence in your backyard. While homeowners are free to perform the work on their property, your fence company or contractor must register with the Village before receiving a permit and starting the fence installation process.
The following is the process for obtaining a building permit for your next fence installation project:
  • The first step in the process is to review the Building Department's Building Guide for Miscellaneous Projects, which will provide you with more details about the rules and regulations of your next fence project
  • The next step is to locate the right type of permit application on the Village of New Lenox's website, in this case, for fences, you will want to use the Miscellaneous Permit, designed specifically for home improvement projects, such as fences, decks, gazebos, etc.
  • Lastly, you will need to bring the completed building permit application to the Building Department. They will want to know details about your proposed fence installation, a property survey or site plan, and if you are using a local fence company, you will have to provide them with their name and registration number.

Fence Permit Approval Process

Please keep in mind that the review and approval process can take up to two weeks, so you want to make sure you factor this into your timeline when you are planning your next fence installation. The good news is, most fence companies, specifically Illinois Fence Company, will help you along in this process so that we get the timing just right. According to the Village of New Lenox's website, smaller projects such as fences are eligible for over the counter same day approval, provided that you submit accurate information that complies with all Village codes and ordinances, and that the fence company you have selected to complete the work is already registered to complete work in the Village.

The minimum fee for a building permit in the Village of New Lenox is around $30 but can go up in price depending on the size and the scope of the work you are having completed on your property.

Miscellaneous Permits Building Guide

As a resident of the Village of New Lenox, you need the following three items to submit your building permit application for your next fence project:
  • You will need to submit a Plat of Survey showing the exact location you plan to have the fence installed as it relates to your property lines. They will also want to know the proposed height of the fence. They explicitly state in their guide that a contract or proposal from a fence company isn't sufficient documentation.
  • You also must show that all posts and 2x4's will remain on the interior of the fence so that the finished side of the fence will face adjoining properties.
  • Lastly, you need to submit a completed and signed Miscellaneous Permit Form to the Building Department

New Lenox Fence Installation Regulations

  • The maximum height of a fence in the front of your yard is 4' feet. The front yard is considered the area from the front of the property line to the building setback line
  • There are special rules and regulations for corner lots that fence companies must adhere to during the fence installation process. You are limited to installing a 4' foot high fence on the sides of your yard that face the streets. These rules are pretty standard in most cities or villages. Their primary concern is that your fence is not obstructing the view of cars in that area.
  • Please keep in mind the maximum height of a fence in the side and rear yard is 6' feet, which is usually the height of most privacy fences on the market today.
  • Also, you need to make sure your fence company installs the fence "on" or "inside" the property line.
  • If you have a pool in your backyard and you are getting a fence to provide additional safety and security for children, the minimum height of the fence must be at least 5' feet tall but can be as high as 6' feet if you prefer.

  • Lastly, please make sure that you, or the fence company that you have selected to complete the job, calls J.U.L.I.E. at 800-892-0123 so that they can come out and mark the underground cables before any digging occurs.
